January 2008 - Hy-Plains
Guy visited
with Jerry Riemann from Hy-Plains Feedyard in Montezuma, Kansas in
February. Our cattle have been finished in this feed yard for the
last two years. The yard has a peak capacity of 52,000. Hy-Plains
provide us with the performance of the cattle plus the feed
conversion. At slaughter, carcass information on each individual
animal is collected. This information is used to generate better
breeding decisions. Our herd has been performance tested since
1973, and results from the 2006 carcass and feedlot data showed that
85% of our Shoreline animals had AAA carcasses. 2005 results showed
a gain of 3.88 lbs/day and feed conversion of 5.42 to 1.
