The beauty of composites is that we have put all the heterosis together for you.  All you have to buy are composite bulls or heifers.  The hybrid vigour is in the package.

Hybrid Vigour gives you 25% advantage over purebred.  This has been tested in many countries and the results are always the same –a 25% advantage on every calf.

Look at it this way:
One rancher has $100,000 to invest and he receives 10% or $10,000 per year.
His neighbour has a 25% advantage.  When investing $100,000. at 12.5%, and receives $12,500 per year.
That is a nice advantage, especially if it is compounded over a 40 year ranching career.

How are we creating this composite breed?

Beef Information Ontario (BIO) has been doing our genetic work for 16 years, generating Across Breed Comparisons (ABC)’s on all our cattle.  Combining the ABC’s with beef research done throughout North America, including genetic models developed for the creation of a composite breed, Dr. Gary Crow from University of Manitoba is generating a Shoreline Stock Farm breeding model specifically tailored to create the optimum composite for Manitoba conditions.  Animal Science Master’s student, Obi Nnamdi is working with Dr. Crow to create this model - his thesis will be published in 2007.

As we create enough 4-way crosses, the ½ blood herd will be sold.  Starting in 2007, 50 – 75 ½ Sim-Her cows will be sold.  By 2010, we will be selling the 4-way crosses to make way for the Shor Composite.  By 2012 – 2015, our composite will be complete.

What is this composite going to look like?

Red or black, polled, easy calving, fast gaining, awesome cows, backed by elaborate carcass testing.  Not only are these cattle fancy looking at, we are testing every step of the way to ensure we have value under the hide.  Currently, we have 3 years of ultrasound information on all our breeding cattle.  We have individual carcass data on our steers, 3 of the last 4 years.

This year, all our steers, plus ½ of our heifers will be fed in Ontario, where we will receive all the feeding information, plus individual carcass information and feed conversion.

2005 statistics on all our steers, top to bottom, gain - 3.8 lbs/day - Dryfeed conversion 5.42 to 1 -cost of gain 46.5 cents/lbs American.  This information came from Hy Plain Feedlot, Dodge City, Kansas,

We think we are on the right track.
