U of M Agriculture Alumni Honoured with Certificates of Merit

Two alumni of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences were recognized recently for their outstanding contributions to Manitoba’s agricultural community.

Bob Durston, retired provincial agricultural representative and Guy Johnson, livestock producer, received Certificates of Merit from the Manitoba Agricultural and Food Sciences Grads Association and the University of Manitoba at the Faculty’s degree and diploma graduation ceremonies this past month.

Guy Johnson was raised on the family farm at Eddystone, MB, and graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture in 1972.  In 1973 Guy’s parents encouraged him to become financially involved in the family farm, Shoreline Stock Farm.   In 1978 he and his wife purchased the remainder of the ranch and in 1999 were incorporated.

Guy returned to the university to complete his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1978 taking a particular interest in economics and beef genetics.  Guy and his family have developed a reputation as leaders in the production of hybrid cattle, having sold 3000 breeding animals across Canada over the years. They are currently developing a composite breed with the help of beef geneticists from around the world.

Guy has been involved in numerous activities in the agricultural community. He was a 4-H leader for the Eddystone Combined Club for six years and has been a member of the Farm Credit Canada Loan Review Board since 1980. He has served in director and executive positions for several agricultural organizations, including the Parkland Livestock Foundation Producer Groups representing the Ste. Rose district livestock producers; the Manitoba Cattle Producer Association, and the Alonsa Conservation District Board. He is currently president of the Westlake Grazing Club.

The community has also benefited from Guy’s volunteer efforts. He was secretary manager of the Westlake Curling Club in Eddystone, is currently chairman for the Strathcona Senior Men’s Curling Playdowns, is a board member of the Westlake Golf Club, and has coached the Ste. Rose du Lac minor baseball and hockey teams.

The farm has been recognized with the Manitoba Conservation Farm Family Award in 1990 and the Manitoba Hereford Association Commercial Farm Family of the Year also in 1990.
